The Suffolk Independent Living Organization is a non-residential organization which works with people with all disabilities. The lack of affordable, accessible housing is a major barrier to People with Disabilities, living in Suffolk County. SILO provides housing advocacy for subsidized housing, rental lists, accessibility, home renovations and home ownership options. It does not possess or administer its own housing. Functions of the housing department include the following:

  • Low income housing information and referral.
  • Assisting individuals with housing applications.
  • Share techniques to find your own housing.
  • Advocacy for accessible low income housing.
  • Information and referrals for people with disabilities who want to own a home.
  • Tenants’ rights for people with disabilities.

There are different types of low cost housing for individuals with:

  • Psychiatric disabilities.
  • Physical disabilities.
  • Developmental disabilities.
  • Sensory and/or hearing impairments.
  • A combination of disabilities.

SILO’s goal and commitment to all people with disabilities in Suffolk County, is to continue our vigorous research, to find more available housing opportinuities for the people we serve and to advocate for significant increases in the supply of housing that will be both affordable and accessible.
